the orange on the left was the edge of the wrapping paper. I shot the photo bigger than the background and knew I would crop it down to fit but when I saw the orange show up I liked it.

welcome back Suz! missed you. yes, actually Christmas wrapping paper. green with blue, red, yellow polka dots and little white snowflakes. good guess!
guess it was not much of a mystery...water in a clear glass baking dish propped up on 2 drinking glasses with a few drops of canola cooking oil (got to be healthy) with my mystery background underneath.

joie-everybody knows oil and water dont mix! but you got it! you figured it out. But...you got the backdrop wrong. not a scarf.
Oil and water, shot thru a glass bottom container... the backdrop could be a spotted scarf or something similar.

PS- if you look closely at some of the spheres you may get a hint as to what I used as a backdrop.

Thanks Cali. No they're not actually lights. It's a common item that I used as a backdrop. At the end of the week I'll post some pics on the setup and how it was done. It's really simple actually.

mystery background ... wrapping paper or decorative tissue paper?
not a lava lamp. hint-the background was flat and laid under the glass baking dish with the water and oil in it.
Colorful lava lamp? (I know..I'm dating myself!)
no not mountains Irishkell. and no not a shower curtain Slr. thank you for looking and your kind comments.
I really like this... its beautiful and very creatively done with the colors you've included. I can't figure out the background. Shower curtain?
Is that a view of the mountains I see peeking through the blue area on the bottom left? Beautiful colorful shot!
Thank you cali. Enjoy your trip.

Very interesting colors here, the droplets provide a very creative play on the lights (I assume they're lights) in the background. Well done.
Thank you viapet. No not raindrops, but it does involve water.
I really love your photo & the rainbow of colors as well. Raindrops on a window maybe?
