Don't give up entirely on bird shots. You did well here. You picked a site with a lot of activity and a good chance to catch one in flight and you did. Next time you are in a park and see some birds feeding like this, check out the lighting and background to optimize you image and pick the best spot. I like the action and the image tells a story about why the bird is landing, FOOD. you were shooting almost into the light and still exposed pretty well. Voted PS sometimes a bunch of birds taking off make a great background for an image of a person or thing.

Thanks GinnieMae and Paperchase! I did have fun trying to catch the bird in flight and I am not going to lie because broken up fortune cookies do help!! LOL Although I did have fun I will probably shy away from flying birds as I do not have the patience. I do admire the people who capture the moment and have the patience because it is a talent!!
If you used auto-focus you needed single point focus because your camera focused on the background. Once you get used to taking these shots you will be using manual focusing to get the exact look you intend for the photo. Nice job though for the first time out.
I'm a total beginner too when it comes to flying birds so I think you've done a good job here. And I like the poor lonely little guy in the back. Nice!

Beautiful beginner shot! These shots are not an easy task, so you did a really fine job! Just need a little more focus on the bird in flight.
Thanks Irishkell! :)
