google them! there's a few different types that do this. I've seen them in Australia, not sure where else they are. also I laughed really hard at your comment lenscap1 haha!
Looks like thorns to me... I'm a big tree fan but unfamiliar with this one if it is a tree. And if it is, I'm going to say its in Texas.
