Thanks everyone. The moon was fairly high, just above the trees. I live on a river and don't get many early up shots. While driving about two weeks ago I wished I could have gotten a shot - it was almost red. I, too, love the moon and try to get good photos of it. I have tried the deck rail, but it is always too low. Good suggestions - I'll have to try some out! :)

You should try another moon shot and use your deck railing to stabilize your camera if possible. I use walls and railings when I'm without my tripod. Was it low on the horizon to take on the nice gold tone?

I really like this. I'm curious what ISO you used. I'd guess 400 or 800 given the shutter speed. There is some gold noise here and there, but in this I think it adds a nice texture. I really like the moon, its color, and how much detail you've captured without a tripod. I'm envious of such moon shots. In lieu of a tripod, you might use a large bean bag, or cloth bag filled with rice, or grain to set your camera on, adjusting the angle by molding into the soft bag. Then set you shutter to a time delay of 2 seconds or so.

You captured a nice color there, without a tripod.
